A pilgrimage to Santiago

In 2008 I left for the third time on foot from St. Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. A pilgrimage to Santiago is a story of a lonely pilgrimage in winter. I left again to find out about this path when there would be hardly any pilgrims. In 2007 I walked together with many pilgrims on their way. I listened to their remarkable and inspiring stories why they came to Spain. These stories you will also find in this book.

"Arriving in Santiago de Compostela gives me goose bumps. The last five kilometres take us from San Marcos Monte de Gozo through the city to the cathedral. I realise these are the last kilometres on this pilgrimage. Santiago de Compostela absorbs us and pulls us in. Like a magnet we are being pulled to plaza Obradoiro. We can see the towers of the cathedral. Our first contact with the cathedral is at plaza da Inmaculada. And suddenly we are standing on plaza Obradoiro. The square is empty and windy. We sit down in the middle of this immense square and face the cathedral. Our journey has finished. A journey full of extremes. An unreal feeling takes possession of me. A sole tear wells up in my eyes. We are in Santiago de Compostela. "
